If you have a burglar alarm system installed within the city limits of Charlotte or the unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County, you must register it. Note that auto, fire, and medical alarm systems are not required to be registered

You can register your alarm system through the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's (CMPD) False Alarm Reduction Unit website. This allows you to manage your permit and pay any associated fines

The alarm permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. It is important to renew your permit before it expires to avoid fines. If the police are dispatched to your address without a valid permit, you may incur fines

False Alarm Fines

  • No fine for valid alarms.

  • First 2 false alarms: No fine.

  • 3rd false alarm: $50 fine.

  • 4th & 5th false alarms: $50 each.

Appeals

If you dispute a CMPD determination that an alarm was false, you can appeal within 30 days of notification. Appeals should be emailed to alarms@cmpd.org
